Nigel Bond

General Counsel & Chief Operating Officer, Legal

Westpac Group

I am currently the General Counsel at Westpac (55th largest bank in the world) with accountability for our Consumer, Business and Wealth Divisions as well as Tech. In addition, I am also Chief Operating Officer for our Legal team (approx. 300 lawyers). I have been at Westpac for 9 years across a number of roles in the Legal Team at the General Counsel level covering amongst other things our M&A, Central Reporting, Consumer, Business and Wealth Businesses. Prior to joining Westpac I was APAC General Counsel for Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Head of Legal, Australia for RBS and a number of other roles in London at both RBS and ABN AMRO. As with most inhouse lawyers I also worked for a number of years in private practice at, Clifford Chance in London, HSF in Australia and PWC.

More generally, I’m interested in improving how my team deliver their legal services every day. We have constant productivity and cost pressure and as such using technology and systems and processes to ensure we deliver good commercial legal advice is critical. Necessarily this needs to be done in an environment where risk is managed (not removed) and critically the team enjoy their jobs and coming into the office every day. I’m a proud husband and dad to my two kids and like to think I’m a strong proponent of work life balance where possible! When I can you will find me at the pool, on a bike or in the gym!
